Job Opening: Communications Director

United for a Fair Economy (UFE) is looking for a communications director to provide strategic leadership, overall coordination and management, and implementation of an organization-wide communication strategy to 1) produce and distribute educational resources and organizer tools, 2) engage and grow our online supporter base, and 3) elevate our message, analysis, and frame with a broader audience.

UFE recently adopted a new 5-year Strategic Plan which calls for the organization to focus its resources on two primary areas: supporting low-wage workers and supporting state-level tax fairness organizing.  Economic inequality and fair wages are in the news and in the air, so this is an exciting time to spread UFE’s message, build our profile, and boost our online presence and social networks.

As the sole dedicated communications staffer, successful execution of this ambitious plan will require a communications director who excels at management and coordination in order to leverage the contributions of others on our highly-collaborative staff team, as well as draw on the expertise of outside consultants where appropriate. The communications director must also be a strong writer that is fully competent in the day-to-day technical side of web site and list serve management.

Management and Coordination:

  • Ensure consistent, high quality look-and-feel of organizational communications.
  • Play a significant role in producing content individually, but also work with the executive director and other staff to share in the generation of written content.
  • Implement clear editing and fact-checking procedures for written content.
  • Track metrics of online, traditional, and other media efforts to document impact.
  • Manage relations with and related budget for outside consultants to provide high-level support for graphic design, web site overhauls, PR / media relations, research, and Spanish translation.
  • Manage interns working within communications, and communications staff that may be hired in the future as the organization grows.

Online / Digital Media:

  • Carry out day-to-day management of web site, including editing, tagging and uploading content, along with general organization and placement, using Drupal as the back-end interface.
  • Coordinate and schedule posting of online content being generated by various program and development staff (including the communications director).
  • Manage online engagement strategies, including email alerts, action pages and related web forms, using Salsa and other tools.
  • Work with consultants as needed to expand pool of shareable infographics and short videos that convey UFE's message in a creative and engaging way.
  • Solicit content for and manage production of monthly eNews update for UFE's general audience and UFE's Responsible Wealth project, to highlight the work.
  • Manage social media channels, including frequent postings to Facebook and Twitter, to elevate UFE content and message as well as that of our partners and allies, while engaging supporters in more interactive way.
  • Work with translator to ensure at least 80% of content from our English language site is translated and posted on the Spanish site within two weeks of the original content placement.
  • Oversee regular syncing and alignment of cloud-based Salsa platform with internal FileMaker supporter database.

Publications:

  • Work with relevant staff to produce key publications, including the "State of the Dream" report and UFE's Annual Report, playing an important role in writing, along with other staff and outside consultants as needed.
  • Provide production oversight of publications, including clear timelines, editing processes, and layout schedules, and work with related consultants.
  • Ensure Spanish translation of major publications like the "State of the Dream" are complete and distributed with minimal lag from the original English versions.

Earned Media:

  • Work with outside media consultants for larger media campaigns while managing periodic placement of op-eds and smaller scale media efforts internally.
  • Write and/or edit press releases, media advisories, and op-eds.
  • Lead and/or assist with compilation of media lists, distribution of releases, and follow-up pitch calling.
  • Work with relevant staff and key spokespeople to develop talking points, messaging strategies, and coach as needed in preparation for media interviews.

General:

  • The communications director reports to the executive director and may be called upon to serve on key staff leadership teams.
  • Produce regular reports on progress made toward stated objectives and next steps as part of broader organizational accountability and coordination.
  • Participate in other UFE work, including development tasks, staff and program meetings, and anti-oppression work.

Qualifications / Skills Desired:

  • This is a senior-level position that requires a minimum of 5 years experience in leading and implementing organizational communication strategies.
  • Experience managing and coordinating the work of others, including unique aspects of working with outside consultants.
  • Strong task management, ability to track multiple deadlines.
  • An understanding of the broad range of communication strategies and their respective usefulness, from digital / new media to traditional earned media.
  • A good eye for highly visual, creative, and engaging content.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to leverage narrative, story telling, values, and social math to effectively convey message.
  • Strong pride in work, sense of quality control and attention to detail.
  • Strong competency in working with Drupal, Salsa, and/or comparable web, email management tools and CRM suites.
  • Ability to do layouts with InDesign and general fluency with Photoshop and Illustrator for graphics work.
  • Collaborative work style and ability to work well with others, understanding communications supportive role of the broader organization.
  • Spanish-language proficiency a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Salary and Benefits: ­­­­­­­­­­­$48,000 to $56,000 depending on experience. Very generous benefits, including full health care coverage of employees and their families, dental, employer-supported 401-K, MBTA pass, generous vacation policy, and more.
