Summer is a season to enjoy the warm weather with family and friends, over cookouts, swimming in lakes and beaches. And these are great opportunities to share worries and concerns about the moment we live in, this difficult time. At UFE, we found new opportunities in our work, and through rest and recharge.

Despite all the challenges we are living with and devoted to finding a way beyond, it is an exciting time to be a part of UFE — with the support of our donors, supporters and allies.

El verano es una estación para disfrutar del clima cálido con la familia y los amigos, haciendo barbacoas, nadando en lagos y playas. Y estas son excelentes oportunidades para compartir preocupaciones e inquietudes sobre el momento que vivimos, esta época difícil. En UFE, encontramos nuevas oportunidades en nuestro trabajo y a través del descanso y la recarga de energías. A pesar de todos los retos a los que nos enfrentamos y de nuestro compromiso por encontrar una solución, es un momento muy emocionante para formar parte de la UFE, con el apoyo de nuestros donantes, simpatizantes y aliados.

A Forced Office Move Unexpectedly Helped Us Meet Community Needs in this Political Moment / Un traslado forzoso de oficinas nos ayudó inesperadamente a satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad en este momento político

This summer has been especially challenging for UFE and immigrant communities. For UFE, we were forced to leave our office on short notice. We made it happen with the commitment and discipline of the Boston staff alongside the support of the staff in North Carolina and Alabama, who took on some tasks to allow the Boston crew to pack and prepare for the move. Even though we stayed in the same building, it was stressful.

Este verano ha sido especialmente difícil para UFE y las comunidades de inmigrantes. En el caso de UFE, nos vimos obligados a abandonar nuestra oficina con poca antelación. Lo conseguimos gracias al compromiso y la disciplina del personal de Boston, junto con el apoyo del personal de Carolina del Norte y Alabama, que asumió algunas tareas para permitir que el equipo de Boston hiciera las maletas y se preparara para la mudanza. Aunque nos quedamos en el mismo edificio, fue muy estresante.

The good thing is that we got assigned to a bigger and more beautiful office. It felt like a reward for all our movement connections and our good work. The first question was: How can we utilize it? The first thought was that UFE can do more of what we’ve done since our beginning: sponsoring spaces, facilitating dialogues, and providing learning processes to understand how the economy works and why we have the growing economic inequality.

Lo bueno es que nos asignaron una oficina más grande y bonita. Nos pareció una recompensa por todas nuestras conexiones con el movimiento y nuestro buen trabajo. La primera pregunta fue: ¿cómo podemos aprovecharla? La primera idea fue que UFE puede hacer más de lo que hemos hecho desde nuestros inicios: patrocinar espacios, facilitar diálogos y proporcionar procesos de aprendizaje para comprender cómo funciona la economía y por qué tenemos una desigualdad económica cada vez mayor.

Local organizations have been asking for our support to create those spaces now, when the country is under so many crises — low income families struggling to cover the basic needs, the rising cost of housing, lack of health care access, immigrants’ communities living with the fear of facing attacks primarily by racial profiling, shootings that are everywhere, a country that is militarized with the money and power more concentrated, and and and and. We have the tools to facilitate difficult conversations, foster critical thinking and analyses, and host healing circles in English and Spanish.

Las organizaciones locales nos han pedido apoyo para crear esos espacios ahora, cuando el país atraviesa tantas crisis: familias de bajos ingresos que luchan por cubrir sus necesidades básicas, el aumento del costo de la vivienda, la falta de acceso a la atención médica, comunidades de inmigrantes que viven con el temor de sufrir ataques principalmente por motivos raciales, tiroteos por todas partes, un país militarizado con una mayor concentración de dinero y poder, y un largo etcétera. Contamos con las herramientas para facilitar conversaciones difíciles, fomentar el pensamiento crítico y el análisis, y organizar círculos de sanación en inglés y español.

What a blessing to have a big space to meet and host several organizations that use our office! / ¡Qué bendición tener un espacio tan grande para reunirnos y acoger a varias organizaciones que utilizan nuestra oficina!

We reconnected with former UFE staffers Steve Schnapp and Mike Prokosch, and asked them to join me in updating the Growing Divide, UFE’s foundational workshop on economic inequality, 31 years after our founding. We invited participants from several local organizations, all of them ongoing partners of UFE’s that organize on the ground with Boston-area communities. We prepared a few tools to share that can help to:

• Understand how the economy is working for the few and damaging the majority
• Understand what lessons we can learn from past movements that gained many of the rights we are now losing, and why, and 
• Explore ways to make more connections, engage in more collaborations, and build unity between communities and campaigns.

Nos pusimos en contacto con Steve Schnapp y Mike Prokosch, antiguos miembros del personal de UFE, y les pedimos que se unieran a mí para actualizar Growing Divide, el taller fundamental de UFE sobre la desigualdad económica, 31 años después de nuestra fundación. Invitamos a participantes de varias organizaciones locales, todas ellas colaboradoras habituales de UFE que trabajan sobre el terreno con las comunidades del área de Boston. Preparamos algunas herramientas para compartir que pueden ayudar a:

• Comprender cómo la economía beneficia a unos pocos y perjudica a la mayoría
• Comprender qué lecciones podemos aprender de los movimientos del pasado que consiguieron muchos de los derechos que ahora estamos perdiendo, y por qué
• Explorar formas de establecer más conexiones, participar en más colaboraciones y fomentar la unidad entre comunidades y campañas

We facilitated the workshop with a very diverse group of participants. We created a bilingual English-Spanish space and built a collective understanding of our economic moment. 

Facilitamos el taller con un grupo muy diverso de participantes. Creamos un espacio bilingüe inglés-español y construimos una comprensión colectiva de nuestro momento económico.

Some of the participants' testimonies at the workshop were about the need for more spaces like that, more tools to be used with their membership, developing critical thinking, valuing the collective stories created at the space, and having UFE as a source of support and accompaniment to struggling communities marginalized by economic policy.

Algunos de los testimonios de los participantes en el taller se refirieron a la necesidad de más espacios como ese, más herramientas para utilizar con sus miembros, el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico, la valoración de las historias colectivas creadas en el espacio y el hecho de contar con la UFE como fuente de apoyo y acompañamiento a las comunidades marginadas por la política económica.

I am a believer that things happen for a reason, and now I understand why we got moved!

Creo que todo sucede por una razón, ¡y ahora entiendo por qué nos mudamos!

Walking our Talk: Staff Take Time to Rest and Restore / Predicando con el ejemplo: tiempo para que el personal descanse y recupere energías

Also, during the summer, the staff was able to take time off to rest and spend quality time with family and friends. It is a way to challenge a system which imposes on us to be working with no stop in order to be part of the society. 

Además, durante el verano, el personal pudo tomarse un descanso, descansar, pasar tiempo de calidad con la familia y los amigos, como una forma de desafiar el sistema que nos impone trabajar sin descanso para formar parte de la sociedad.

As a nonprofit leader, I'd rather that my staff enjoy being in nature, cooking their favorite dish and sharing it, listening to music, reading books, re-energizing to be ready for the fall (which is full of work commitments!), and — the most important — taking care of their mental health.

Como líder de una organización sin fines de lucro, prefiero que mi personal disfrute de la naturaleza, cocinar su plato favorito y compartirlo, escuchar música, leer libros y recargar energías para estar preparados para el otoño – que está lleno de compromisos de trabajo – y, lo más importante, cuidar su salud mental.
