What are the connections between U.S. immigration laws and historical processes in immigrants’ countries of origin? How have these dynamics shaped migration patterns, influenced displacement, and impacted the realities our communities face today?

CONSTRUYENDO UN ANÁLISIS COLECTIVO: COMPRENDER LA HISTORIA DE LA MIGRACIÓN PARA FORTALECER LA ORGANIZACIÓN COMUNITARIA

¿Qué relación existe entre las leyes de inmigración estadounidenses y los procesos históricos en los países de origen de los inmigrantes? ¿Cómo han influido estas dinámicas en los patrones migratorios, los movimientos de población y la realidad que enfrentan nuestras comunidades en la actualidad?

With the aim of strengthening the analytical and critical thinking skills of the team and volunteers of Neighbors United for a Better East Boston (NUBE), the team from United for a Fair Economy (UFE) was invited to facilitate, on December 7, a day of collective analysis to take up these questions. 

Con el objetivo de fortalecer las habilidades de análisis y pensamiento crítico del equipo y los voluntarios de Neighbors United for a Better East Boston (NUBE), el equipo de United for a Fair Economy (UFE) fue invitado a facilitar, el 7 de diciembre, una día de análisis colectivo para abordar estas cuestiones.

We began the activity with a circle of introductions, where participants introduced themselves by sharing their names, country of origin and the reason why they decided to spend a Sunday participating in the workshop.

Comenzamos la actividad con un círculo de presentaciones, donde cada participante se presentó compartiendo su nombre, país de origen y la razón por la que decidió dedicar el domingo a participar en el taller.

The Human Face of Immigration / El rostro humano de la inmigración

Then we facilitated an activity called "The Human Face of Immigration." The participants worked in pairs, talking about their own migration stories or those of their families, and reflecting on why people migrate to the US. Using post-its they wrote key words of the “why” of people’s migration, their country, and the year, then added those to a big paper timeline on the wall.

Luego facilitamos una actividad llamada “El rostro humano de la inmigración”, en la que los participantes trabajaron en parejas, hablando sobre sus propias historias de migración o las de sus familias, y sobre por qué las personas migran a los EE. UU., usando notas adhesivas para escribir palabras clave sobre el motivo de la migración, el país y el año. Después, colocaron estas notas en una línea de tiempo.

Working in pairs / Trabajando en parejas

Using participants’ stories, we analyzed what's driving migration – the push and pull factors and the race to the bottom impacting workers. Using the timeline again, making sense of their stories, we reflected on the years that U.S. policies were enforced and the impacts in different countries.

Después realizamos un análisis sobre qué impulsa la migración, los factores de empuje y atracción, y la “carrera hacia el fondo” de los trabajadores, utilizando nuevamente la línea de tiempo, relacionando sus historias, los países y los años con las políticas que se aplicaron.

Building the timeline / Construyendo la línea de tiempo

The last activity happened in groups of four. Using their creativity and imagination, and pretending they have the power to make policies, we asked participants what policy they would work on and what strategies they used to make it reality.

La última actividad se realizó en grupos de cuatro; usando su creatividad e imaginación, los participantes fingieron tener el poder de crear políticas, y discutieron qué políticas implementarían y qué estrategias usarían para hacerlas realidad.

Building the Collective / Construyendo lo colectivo

As part of the closing activity in the circle, every participant shared one word summarizing their experience in the workshop. Powerful words were shared like "solidarity,” “unity,” “love,” “learning,” “process,” “analysis,” “community,” “gratitude” and many more. Participants shared the reasons that motivate them to contribute daily to community building, especially in these times of violence and denial of human rights for communities of color.

Como parte del cierre, en círculo, cada participante compartió una palabra que resumiera su experiencia en el taller, y se compartieron palabras poderosas como “solidaridad, unidad, amor, aprendizaje, proceso, análisis, comunidad, gratitud”, entre muchas más, así como las razones que los motivan a contribuir diariamente a la construcción de comunidad, especialmente en estos tiempos de violencia y negación de derechos humanos para las comunidades de color.

Jeannette Huezo, UFE’s Executive Director and Senior Popular Educator, thanked all participants for dedicating their time to this powerful space, which allowed us to collectively analyze the past and present, recognize the connections between our struggles in the U.S. and in our countries of origin, and reflect on how these experiences strengthen community organizing today.
