Taxes Raise Revenue

How much tax
revenue do we need?

The purpose of taxation is to raise revenue. The question of how much revenue a tax system should raise is essential to any discussion about reforming the tax code.

The simple answer is that our tax code needs to raise enough money to adequately fund our federal government.

But how much is enough?

Raising enough tax revenue begins with ensuring that valuable programs and services aren't at continual risk of being cut due to lack of funding. The notion that we need to cut government spending because there isn't enough money for it is false. We can raise plenty of revenue to fund all of our priorities.

Tax cuts, deductions, loopholes and changes to the tax code have reduced the amount of revenue that we raise from federal taxes.
