Thanks to all who joined us for the grand opening of the Avila Movement Center in Durham, NC! After a year of isolation, we were glad for this rare opportunity to reconnect with Durham leaders and community organizers. Visitors from across the state and beyond came to celebrate with us in early October. There was good food, a tour of the property, and an opportunity for people to share their visions for how we can use this space to grow movements for justice in the South!

In the evening on Friday, October 1st, we held our first open house! After exploring the property, visitors had dinner and learned about the Avila Center’s story, UFE's role and vision, and how we are going to get there.

The next day we had a larger community celebration! People brought their whole families to celebrate the launch of this new community space. Children decorated the sidewalks with chalk, we ate lunch, engaged in popular education activities, and took a tour. There was also a memorial ceremony for our late colleague Michael Young whose original vision for the space helped make it a reality.

These events were free, open to the public, and held outdoors and socially distant as required by public health authorities. People who could not attend in person are invited to watch the livestream from our Facebook page. You can still view this video here! The Avila Movement Center is a first-of-its-kind space for folks to gather and grow together in Durham, NC. The center has 52 acres of beautiful land, dormitories and meeting spaces which will be used to find community, strengthen grassroots organizing, and build collective power. We look forward to holding trainings and events in this beautiful space!

¡Gracias a todos los que se unieron a nosotros para la gran inauguración del Avila Movement Center en Durham, NC! Después de un año de aislamiento, nos alegramos de esta rara oportunidad de volver a conectarnos con los líderes de Durham y los organizadores de la comunidad. ¡En la noche del viernes 1 de octubre, celebramos nuestra primera jornada de puertas abiertas! Después de explorar la propiedad, los visitantes cenaron y aprendieron sobre la historia del Centro Ávila, la visión de UFE y cómo vamos a llegar allí.

¡Al día siguiente tuvimos una celebración comunitaria más grande! La gente trajo a toda su familia para celebrar el lanzamiento de este nuevo espacio comunitario. Los niños decoraron las aceras con tiza, almorzamos, participamos en actividades de educación popular e hicimos un recorrido. También hubo una ceremonia en memoria de nuestro colega Michael Young, cuya visión original del espacio ayudó a convertirlo en realidad.

Estos eventos fueron gratuitos, abiertos al público y se llevaron a cabo al aire libre y socialmente distantes como lo requieren las autoridades de salud pública. El Avila Movement Center es un espacio único en su tipo para que las personas se reúnan y crezcan juntas en Durham, Carolina del Norte.
