Post-election reflections

It has been one month since the re-election of a billionaire who has promised to sharply curtail civil liberties, dismantle core parts of the institutional infrastructure for governing, round up and deport millions of immigrants, and shift more billions of dollars to his cronies.

I know how difficult the result of the election is for us as individuals, for our communities, and for our work for liberation, equity, and self-determination.

In these early days, as we reel in the enormity of what the incoming administration is promising, and what we and those we care about may face, I want to share with UFE’s community what I shared with our staff: it is ok not being ok.

Please, when you feel the need, take time to reflect, disconnect and rest your mind and body. Your self-care is importante. Tending to the needs of your human body and mind is one way to challenge the oppressive systems we operate under. We will need to continue pausing to ground and nourish ourselves throughout the days ahead.

After and as we pause to heal in this moment, we need to continue supporting political education and organizing for economic and racial justice. It is the work we have been doing and the work we will continue to do.

Even though the context has shifted – and we need to have a realistic view of the momentum now propelling reactionary and authoritarian forces – we remain anchored in our faith in what we can do together. Be ready, because what is coming won’t be easy, but we are together and we are not alone.

One thing that has not changed is that ordinary people continue to be the experts of their own economic experiences, and are potentially powerful agents of change. Through collective reflection, critical analysis, and strategic action we transform ourselves and forge ahead with a vision for a more democratic, sustainable, and equitable economy.

Reflexiones postelectorales

Ha pasado un mes desde la reelección de un multimillonario que ha prometido drásticamente acortar las libertades civiles, desmantelar partes centrales de la infraestructura institucional para gobernar, arrestar y deportar a millones de inmigrantes y transferir miles de millones de dólares adicionales a sus compinches. Sé lo difícil que es ver los resultados de las elecciones para nosotros como individuos, para nuestras comunidades y nuestros esfuerzos hacia la liberación, equidad y autodeterminación.

En estos primeros días, mientras nos damos cuenta de la gravedad de lo que promete la siguiente administración y de lo que nosotros y aquellos que nos importan podríamos enfrentar, quiero compartir con la comunidad de UFE lo que hecompartido con nuestro personal: está bien no estar bien.

Por favor, cuando sienta la necesidad, tóme el tiempo para reflexionar, desconectar y descansar su mente y cuerpo. Cuidarse a sí mismo es importante. Atendiendo las necesidades del cuerpo y la mente humana es una forma de desafiar los sistemas opresivos bajo las cuales operamos. Tendremos que seguir deteniéndonos en la tierra y nutrirnos durante los próximos días.

Después y mientras pausamos para sanar durante este momento, necesitamos continuar apoyando la educación política y organizándonos para la justicia económica y racial. Este es el esfuerzo que hemos estado haciendo y el que continuaremos haciendo.

Aunque el contexto ha cambiado –y necesitamos tener una visión realista del impulso que ahora propulsa fuerzas reaccionarias y autoritarias– seguiremos anclados en nuestra fe en lo que podemos hacer juntos. Estén preparados, porque lo que viene no será fácil, pero estamos juntos y no solos.

Una cosa que no ha cambiado es que la gente ordinaria que sigue siendo expertos en sus propias experiencias económicas y son agentes potenciales de cambios poderosos. A través de la reflexión colectiva, el análisis crítico y la acción estratégica, nos transformamos y avanzamos con una visión de una economía más democrática, sostenible y equitativa.
