In late May, United for a Fair Economy (UFE) returned to the Avila Center for Community Leadership in North Carolina for our annual Spring Training of Trainers (ToT).

A finales de mayo, Unidos por una Economía Justa (UFE) volvió al Avila Center for Community Leadership de Carolina del Norte para celebrar nuestra formación anual de primavera de formadores (ToT).

For three days, movement builders from across the country came together to deepen their political education, strengthen their facilitation skills, and build community in a space rooted in care and justice.

Durante tres días, constructores de movimientos de todo el país se reunieron para profundizar en su formación política, fortalecer sus habilidades de facilitación y construir comunidad en un espacio arraigado en el cuidado y la justicia.

This year’s cohort included 30 participants from Boston, Alabama, El Salvador, and beyond. They arrived carrying the weight of overlapping crises: war, forced displacement, economic instability, and growing state violence. But they also came with questions, urgency, and a deep commitment to justice.

La cohorte de este año incluía a 30 participantes de Boston, Alabama, El Salvador y otros lugares. Llegaron con el peso de crisis superpuestas: guerra, desplazamientos forzosos, inestabilidad económica y creciente violencia estatal. Pero también llegaron con preguntas, urgencia y un profundo compromiso con la justicia.

At the center of our time together was one central question:

How do we use popular and political education to understand the roots of injustice – and how do we organize to change it?

Love in the Time of Grief / Amor en tiempos de duelo

UFE trainings are unique in that they are shaped by those who show up. Among the voices in the room were immigrant workers, students, trans and queer organizers, elders, and Indigenous land defenders. One story that moved many was that of a Palestinian couple – their journey, filled with love and loss, has been recently shared on the podcast How to Survive the End of the World in an episode called “A Palestinian Love Story.”

Las formaciones de UFE son únicas en el sentido de que las configuran quienes asisten a ellas. Entre las voces presentes en la sala había trabajadores inmigrantes, estudiantes, organizadores trans y queer, ancianos y defensores de las tierras indígenas. Una historia que conmovió a muchos fue la de una pareja palestina: su viaje, lleno de amor y pérdida, se ha compartido recientemente en el podcast How to Survive the End of the World (Cómo sobrevivir al fin del mundo) en un episodio titulado “A Palestinian Love Story” (Una historia de amor palestina).

Their presence at Avila set a tone for the weekend – one of grief transformed into clarity, and of healing made possible through collective storytelling. Their courage in speaking truth to displacement, colonialism, and love helped open the door for others to do the same.

Later in the weekend, the couple joined an Indigenous leader in co-facilitating a ritual around the meaning of trees in our cultures. For many, the oak tree emerged as a site of memory and strength, sacred to both Indigenous communities in the U.S. and Palestinians in exile. One participant later shared that they’d never known Palestinians were Indigenous – a small shift in understanding that led to a much deeper sense of connection.

Para muchos, el roble surgió como un lugar de memoria y fuerza, sagrado tanto para las comunidades indígenas de Estados Unidos como para los palestinos en el exilio. Más tarde, uno de los participantes dijo que nunca había sabido que los palestinos fueran indígenas, un pequeño cambio en la comprensión que dio lugar a un sentimiento de conexión mucho más profundo.

Building Skills That Travel / Desarrollar competencias que viajan

At UFE, we treat political education as something alive. Grounded in the everyday struggles and wisdom people carry, our trainings are shared spaces where everyone is both teacher and learner, and stories shape the curriculum.

En UFE tratamos la educación política como algo vivo. Basados en las luchas cotidianas y la sabiduría de la gente, nuestros cursos de formación son espacios compartidos en los que todo el mundo es a la vez profesor y alumno, y las historias dan forma al plan de estudios.

Friday kicked off with one of UFE’s core workshops on growing economic inequality – layered with discussions about immigration, deportation, and the economic policies that drive forced migration. Concurrently, another group gathered with magazines, scissors, and glue to build collages that imagined new worlds. Dreaming, too, is part of the work.

El viernes comenzó con uno de los talleres centrales de UFE sobre la creciente desigualdad económica, mezclado con debates sobre inmigración, deportación y las políticas económicas que impulsan la migración forzosa. Al mismo tiempo, otro grupo se reunió con revistas, tijeras y pegamento para construir collages que imaginaban nuevos mundos. Soñar también forma parte del trabajo.

Throughout the weekend, participants practiced facilitation techniques, learned how to build interactive agendas, and worked together to create tools they could bring back home. The training not only reaffirmed our collective capacity to organize and educate in communities everywhere, but it also spoke to our ability to imagine, build, and create.

The space soon became a living library. One by one, participants shared chapters from their lives – stories of survival, exile, joy, and resolve.

El espacio pronto se convirtió en una biblioteca viviente. Uno a uno, los participantes compartieron capítulos de sus vidas: historias de supervivencia, exilio, alegría y determinación.

Among them was a 62-year-old participant who had recently lost his job after ID restrictions prevented him from renewing critical documents. Another came from El Salvador and spoke about the long shadows of U.S. foreign policy on their community. A trans organizer from the South shared their fight to protect chosen family in the face of rising violence. The stories were distinct, but the themes were shared: resilience, exclusion, and the deep will to fight for something better.

Entre ellos había un participante de 62 años que había perdido recientemente su trabajo después de que las restricciones de identificación le impidieran renovar documentos fundamentales. Otro procedía de El Salvador y habló de las largas sombras de la política exterior estadounidense sobre su comunidad. Una organizadora trans del Sur compartió su lucha por proteger a la familia elegida frente a la creciente violencia. Las historias eran distintas, pero los temas eran comunes: resiliencia, exclusión y la profunda voluntad de luchar por algo mejor.

These stories weren’t just personal – they were political. They helped us make sense of the systems we live in and sharpen our strategies for dismantling them. Together, we turned story into strategy.

Estas historias no eran sólo personales: eran políticas. Nos ayudaron a dar sentido a los sistemas en los que vivimos y a afinar nuestras estrategias para desmantelarlos. Juntos, convertimos la historia en estrategia.

Carrying It Home / Llevarlo a casa

By the time we left Avila, we weren’t just carrying new skills – we were carrying each other. We left with a renewed sense of connection, and a shared understanding: none of us are free until all of us are free.

Cuando nos fuimos de Ávila, no sólo habíamos adquirido nuevas habilidades, sino que nos habíamos contagiado mutuamente. Nos fuimos con un renovado sentido de la conexión y un entendimiento compartido: ninguno de nosotros es libre hasta que todos lo seamos.

The organizers who gathered in Avila will return to their communities with fresh tools and deeper clarity, continuing work already underway in immigrant neighborhoods, student collectives, Indigenous resistance movements, and worker centers across the Americas. And UFE will be here, every step of the way.

Los organizadores que se reunieron en Ávila volverán a sus comunidades con nuevas herramientas y una mayor claridad, continuando el trabajo que ya está en marcha en barrios de inmigrantes, colectivos estudiantiles, movimientos de resistencia indígena y centros de trabajadores de toda América. Y UFE estará aquí, en cada paso del camino.

As inequality sharpens and repression grows, so does our belief that change is not only possible – it’s already happening. One story, one training, one act of courage at a time.
