Lily Perkins (she/her) is joining UFE for a Summer 2024 internship through Student Action with Farmworkers in North Carolina. She is gathering workers' stories for a story bank, supporting worker mobilizations at Duke University and in Durham and elsewhere, and creating communications content for UFE's website and social media.

Hi, my name is Lily Perkins. I am excited to be working with United for a Fair Economy in Durham this summer. I am originally from Marietta, Georgia, but for the past three years, I have attended Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. I recently graduated with a major in Sustainable Development and a minor in Philosophy. 

Hola, mi nombre es Lily Perkins. Estoy muy emocionada por la oportunidad de trabajar con Unidos Por Una Economía Justa en Durham durante este verano. Originalmente soy de Marietta, Georgia, pero por los últimos tres años he estudiado en la universidad Appalachian State ubicada en Boone, Carolina del Norte. Recientemente me gradué con especialización en estudios de Desarollamiento del Ambiente y un minor en filosofía. 

I am passionate about the intersection of environmental and social issues, specifically regarding our food systems and exploring alternatives to industrialized agriculture. I am committed to working towards a more sustainable future that prioritizes the well-being of workers, understanding that workers’ rights and environmental justice as deeply interconnected. 

Me siento apasionada acerca de la intersección entre los problemas ambientales y sociales, específicamente con respecto a nuestro sistemas de alimento y explorando alternativas a la agricultura industrializada. Estoy comprometida al progreso de un futuro sostenible que prioriza el bienestar de los trabajadores, mientras entiendo que los derechos de los trabajadores y la justicia ambiental están profundamente interconectadas. 

In addition to my passion surrounding sustainability, I am also an advocate for disability justice. I believe that integrating disability justice into the broader narrative of workers’ rights is integral to the movement. 

Adicional a mi pasión por la sostenibilidad, también soy una defensora de justicia de la discapacidad. Yo creo que integrando justicia de la discapacidad a la narrativa amplia de derechos de los trabajadores es integral a movimiento. 

Outside of these pursuits, I enjoy exploring the outdoors whether it be hiking, camping, or just sitting outside. Following my interest in food systems, I love cooking and gardening. You can often find me making large meals for friends and family. When I’m not busy, I am typically reading or watching shows with my cat by my side. 

Afuera de estas misiones, yo disfruto explorando al aire libre, ya sea el senderismo, el campamento o simplemente sentándome afuera. Siguiendo mi interés en el sistema de alimentos, me encanta cocinar y la jardinería. A menudo me podrían encontrar preparando comidas grandes para mis amigos y familiares. Cuando no estoy ocupada, normalmente estoy leyendo o mirando series de televisión con mi gato a mi lado. 

Through working with United for a Fair Economy this summer, I am excited to learn more about grassroots organizing and listen & amplify people’s stories. I firmly believe everyone has an important story to tell, and every story has something you can learn from. I am grateful for this opportunity to exchange knowledge with others and contribute to United for a Fair Economy’s mission of promoting economic justice.

A través de mi trabajo con Unidos Por Una Economía Justa, estoy emocionada por aprender más acerca de la organización comunitaria y escuchar y amplificar las historias de las personas. Yo firmamento creo que todos tienen una historia importante para contar, y que cada historia nos puede enseñar algo. Ria Escamilla-Gil (they/them) is joining UFE for a Summer 2024 internship through the Social Justice strand of the WOW program at Brandeis University. My name is Ria Escamilla-Gil (They/Them) and I am a sophomore at Brandeis University studying History and International/Global Studies with a minor in Legal Studies and East Asian Studies. I have the great honor of working with United for a Fair Economy this summer in communication and advocacy work through translation, writing, and sharing the work that UFE is doing and has been doing since its founding. 

¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Ria Escamilla-Gil (Elle/Elles)  y estoy en mi segundo año en Brandeis University, estudiando historia y estudios internacionales/globales con un minor en estudios legales y estudios del Asia Este. Tengo el gran honor de trabajar con la organización Unidos Por Una Economía Justa, apoyándolos con esfuerzos de comunicación y abogacía a través de la traducción, escritura, y compartiendo el trabajo que la organización está haciendo ahora y ha estado haciendo desde su comienzo.

I am very passionate about intersectionality and community building and the ways that history can help us build a better future for tomorrow and years to come. As a Queer FGLI (First Generation, Low-Income) student, I have grown to realize the importance of meaningful connections, advocacy efforts, and being understanding and open to discourse with others to learn from each other. 

Yo soy muy apasionada acerca de la interseccionalidad y la creación de comunidad y las maneras en que el pasado nos puede ayudar a crear un mejor futuro. Como un miembro de la comunidad LGBTQ+ y estudiante de primera generación/bajos ingresos, empecé a darme cuenta de la importancia de conexiones significativas, esfuerzos de abogacía, y siendo comprensivo y abierto a la discusión de temas importantes para que aprendan unos de los otros.

As someone hoping to become a lawyer, I want to use legislation and my passion for equality and social justice to speak up for those without a voice and also to highlight their struggles. As a student and global citizen, I hope to use what I learn and my own personal experiences in moving forward in the activist movement and creating a better world.

Como alguien que espera ser un abogado en el futuro, deseo usar la legislación y mi pasión por la equidad y justicia social para levantar mi voz por la gente que no tenga una y resaltar sus luchas. Como un estudiante y ciudadano global, espero poder usar lo que aprendo y mis propias experiencias para avanzar en el movimiento activista y crear un mundo mejor.

With interests in immigration, racial justice, history, international relations, and law, I also enjoy my time running, writing poetry, and spending time with loved ones. 

Con intereses en imigracion, justicia de raza, ciencia histórica, relaciones internacionales, y la ley, también disfruto corriendo, escribiendo poesía y pasando tiempo con mis seres queridos. 

In my time working with UFE, I hope to contribute to a growing organization and an effort to educate, raise awareness, and uplift minority groups and other unheard voices. I hope to use research, writing, and translation as empowerment tools that can create an impact towards social justice.

Durante mi tiempo con la organización, espero contribuir al crecimiento de Unidos Por Una Economía Justa y sus esfuerzos de educación, creando conciencia y edificando a las minoridades y otras voces que merecen ser escuchadas. Hello! My name is Kiah Holmstrom (she/her), and I am excited to be working with United For a Fair Economy this summer in communications and social media! 

Hola! Mi nombre es Kiah Holmstrom, y estoy muy emocionada de trabajar con Unidos Por Una Economía Justa este verano en comunicaciones y redes sociales!

Originally from South Dakota, I am a rising senior at Brandeis University studying Political Science and Journalism. Growing up in a working-class household (with two union presidents as parents!), I have always had social justice at the forefront of my values. I was taught to do whatever I could to help anyone, regardless of their background. Prior to UFE, I’ve worked on various political campaigns in the United States and for a Member of UK Parliament, in organizer and communications roles. With goals of becoming a trade union lawyer, I will keep the family tradition of being an advocate and a community organizer.

Originaria de Dakota del Sur, estoy a punto de comenzar mi último año en Brandeis University estudiando Ciencias Políticas y Periodismo. Creciendo en una familia de clase obrera (con dos presidentes de uniones como papás!), siempre he tenido la justicia social como vanguardia de mis valores. Me enseñaron a hacer todo lo posible que pudiera para ayudar a cualquiera, sin importar sus antecedentes. Previo a UFE, yo he trabajado en varias campañas políticas en los Estados Unidos y para un miembro del Parlamento de Inglaterra, realizando papeles de organizadora y comunicación. Con la meta de convertirme en abogada sindical, mantendré la tradición familiar de abogacía y organizando la comunidad.

I am excited to learn more about the role that community organizing has in building a fairer economy, alongside the role and the strength that trade unions have in our economy. My background and experience ties right into UFE’s mission and values, and I’m excited to be working for an organization that share these principles.

Estoy entusiasmada de aprender más sobre el papel de la organización comunitaria en la fundación de una economía más justa, junto con el papel y la fuerza que las uniones sindicatos tienen en nuestra economía. Outside of working for UFE, I am the General Manager of Brandeis’ student-run radio station, a Boston sports fan, and a budding photographer. You can find me enjoying brunch with my friends, watching baseball at Fenway Park, or creating a hyper-specific mood playlist on Spotify.”

Además de trabajar con Unidos Por Una Economía Justa, soy la gerente general de la estación de radio dirigida por estudiantes en mi universidad, fanática de los deportes de Boston, y fotógrafa de edificios.
