Erika Arévalo Arteaga, UFE’s Executive Assistant and Popular Educator, shares her transformative experience at a UFE Training of Trainers.

TRAINING OF TRAINERS TRANSFORMADORA: DE PARTICIPANTE A MIEMBRO DEL EQUIPO DE UFE

Erika Arévalo Arteaga, asistente ejecutiva y educadora popular de la UFE, comparte su experiencia transformadora en una capacitación de formadores de la UFE.

My first experience in a training offered by United for a Fair Economy (UFE) was both healing and restorative. I still remember the invitation from Jeannette Huezo to participate in one of the Training of Trainers sessions. From my background in community work, I thought it would be a productive space to build relationships and strengthen organizing strategies. I never imagined that a space like this would change my life.

Mi primera experiencia en un entrenamiento ofrecido por United for a Fair Economy (UFE) fue sanadora y reparadora. Recuerdo la invitación que me hiciera Jeannette Huezo para participar en uno de los entrenamientos para formadores. Desde mi experiencia en el trabajo comunitario, pensé que sería un espacio muy productivo para la construcción de relaciones y para apoyar los procesos de organización. Jamás imaginé que un espacio como este cambiaría mi vida.

I was organizing with a broken heart. I arrived wondering how I could continue serving my community when I had not yet processed my own grief after the death of my husband. I had taken care of others, but forgotten to care for myself. I didn’t know that I could heal; I didn’t understand how that could even be possible.

Estaba organizando con el alma rota. Llegué preguntándome cómo podía seguir ofreciendo apoyo y servicio a la comunidad si no había podido procesar mi propio duelo tras la muerte de mi esposo. Me había dedicado a cuidar, pero olvidé cuidarme a mí misma. No sabía que podía sanar; no entendía cómo eso podía ser posible.

My first encounter with the Ávila Center, in North Carolina, was in the Spring of 2024. I came excited about the opportunity to connect with organizers from across the United States, to learn from their experiences, and to share in community. I never imagined that I would leave that place renewed and free.

Mi primer contacto con el Centro Ávila, en Carolina del Norte, fue en la primavera de 2024.. Llegué emocionada por la posibilidad de conectar con organizadores de todo Estados Unidos, conocer sus experiencias y aprender en comunidad. Jamás imaginé que saldría de ese lugar renovada y liberada.

Community altars and healing circles were terms I had heard before, but I had never experienced them in such a powerful way. I had never felt such a deep sense of liberation — a peace that rises from the very depths of your being. I will never forget how Eroc and Luana, the facilitators of that space, connected with my spirit and emotions. From the opening of the circle, I felt a powerful energy that made me feel confident, strong, and protected in community. In that space, I was finally able to release the pain I had carried for two years — the pain that had kept me from moving forward, from being, and from simply existing.

Altares comunitarios y círculos de sanación eran términos que conocía, pero jamás había participado en ellos de una forma tan poderosa. Nunca antes había sentido una liberación tan profunda, esa paz que nace desde el fondo del ser. Jamás olvidaré cómo Eroc y Luana, facilitadores de aquel espacio, lograron conectar con mi espíritu y mis emociones. Desde la apertura del círculo sentí una energía poderosa que me envolvía, me daba confianza, fuerza y protección en comunidad. En ese ambiente pude expresar, por fin, el dolor que había cargado durante dos años, ese dolor que no me permitía seguir, ser y estar.

I came to understand that healing and freeing myself, not only from grief, but also from all the oppression we have been exposed to for so long, would help me reach a greater capacity for awareness and for collective struggle within the community.

Llegué a comprender que sanarme y liberarme, no solo del dolor, sino también de toda la opresión a la que hemos estado expuestos durante tanto tiempo, me ayudaría a alcanzar una mayor capacidad de conciencia y de lucha colectiva dentro de la comunidad. 

It may sound incredible, but through that healing circle offered by UFE, I found peace and liberation. From my work in the community, I was constantly seeking to connect more deeply with people and to support spaces of freedom and the fight for the rights of our immigrants. But how could I keep fighting if, inside, I didn’t have the strength to do so? Through this process, I came to understand that healing and freeing myself, not only from grief, but also from all the oppression we have been exposed to for so long, would help me reach a greater capacity for awareness and for collective struggle within the community.

Puede parecer increíble, pero a través del círculo de sanación que ofrece UFE, encontré paz y liberación. En mi trabajo en la comunidad, buscaba constantemente conectar más profundamente con las personas y apoyar los espacios de libertad y la lucha por los derechos de nuestros inmigrantes. Pero, ¿cómo podía seguir luchando si, en mi interior, no tenía la fuerza para hacerlo? A través de este proceso, llegué a comprender que sanarme y liberarme, no solo del dolor, sino también de toda la opresión a la que hemos estado expuestos durante tanto tiempo, me ayudaría a alcanzar una mayor capacidad de conciencia y de lucha colectiva dentro de la comunidad. 

I continued to train with UFE. When I returned to continue my development with the Fall ToT, I once again felt welcomed, embraced, and held by the community. Before long I was moving quickly from being a trainee into facilitating activities and co-leading some trainings.

Seguí formándome con UFE. Cuando volví para continuar mi desarrollo con el  ToT de Otoño,, una vez más me sentí bienvenida, acogida y apoyada por la comunidad. En poco tiempo pasé de ser una aprendiz a facilitar actividades y codirigir algunas formaciones.

One year later, I returned to the same place — the Fall ToT at Avila— but this time from a different role: I am now part of the United for a Fair Economy staff. My role is to assist the Executive Director and the Popular Education team. In October 2025, I experienced my first Training of Trainers (ToT) as a member of the team that organized the event. I was able to witness all that goes into the organizing process and to appreciate the high level of preparation, dedication, and commitment of each facilitator, all working to create spaces for collective learning, healing, and critical thinking.

Un año después, volví al mismo lugar, el ToT de otoño en Ávila, pero esta vez con un papel diferente: ahora formo parte del equipo de United for a Fair Economy. Mi función es apoyar al director ejecutivo y al equipo de Educación Popular. En octubre de 2025, participé por primera vez en un Training of Trainers (ToT) como miembro del equipo organizador. Pude ser testigo de todo lo que conlleva el proceso de organización y apreciar el alto nivel de preparación, dedicación y compromiso de cada facilitador, todos trabajando para crear espacios de aprendizaje colectivo, sanación y pensamiento crítico..

In UFE trainings, you quickly realize that you don’t need a pen or notebook to learn. We learn by flowing, sharing, and healing together in community. It’s in that process that we also free ourselves from traditional systems of oppression — the ones that teach us that knowledge only comes “from above.” In a ToT, we learn in community, drawing from our own experiences, realities, and wisdom.

En los entrenamientos de UFE te das cuenta de que no necesitas un bolígrafo o una libreta para aprender. Aprendemos fluyendo, compartiendo y sanando en comunidad. Es en ese proceso donde también nos liberamos de los sistemas de opresión tradicionales que nos enseñan que el conocimiento solo viene “de arriba”. En un ToT aprendemos en comunidad, desde nuestras experiencias, nuestras realidades y nuestras propias sabidurías.
