Honoring Anne Price and Tess Ewing as they pass the torch of leadership / Honrando a Anne Price y Tess Ewing al pasar la antorcha del liderazgo

With a full heart, I thank Anne Price for her impactful tenure as UFE’s Board Director and Tess Ewing for her steady hand as UFE’s Board Member and Treasurer.

De todo corazón, agradezco a Anne Price por su impactante gestión como Directora de la Junta Directiva de UFE y a Tess Ewing por su mano firme como Miembro de la Junta Directiva y Tesorera de UFE.

Both Anne and Tess joined in March 2019, as part of the new cycle of board members that year. Anne Price, Co-President and Founder of the Maven Collective, was then the Executive Director of the Insight Center in Oakland, California. Tess Ewing, a labor organizer and retiree with vast experience on popular education, was already a longtime partner and friend of UFE who brought the same values and vision for economic justice work.

Tanto Anne como Tess se incorporaron en marzo de 2019, como parte del nuevo ciclo de miembros de la junta directiva de ese año. Anne Price, copresidenta y fundadora del Colectivo Maven, era entonces directora ejecutiva del Insight Center en Oakland, California. Tess Ewing, organizadora sindical y jubilada con amplia experiencia en educación popular, ya era apoyadora y amiga de UFE desde hacía mucho tiempo y aportaba los mismos valores y visión para el trabajo por justicia económica.

Within a few months — at the annual meeting in June 2019 — Anne Price would become the UFE’s Board Chair at UFE. For the first time, the organization was led by two women of color — Anne as a proud African American Descendant of Slavery and me, the Executive Director and Senior Popular Educator, a proud immigrant from El Salvador.

En pocos meses, durante la reunión anual de junio de 2019, Anne Price se convirtió en la presidenta de la Junta Directiva de UFE. Por primera vez, la organización estaba dirigida por dos mujeres de color: Anne, orgullosa afroamericana descendiente de la esclavitud, y yo, directora ejecutiva y educadora popular, orgullosa inmigrante Salvadoreña.

It was a very exciting moment for the organization, and at the same time a moment full of challenges. Nevertheless, we were able to strengthen our relationships, bring in new board members, and have the most diverse group of individuals yet who were representing the work we do. Together, we have been keeping the organization sustainable and visible, and fulfilling our mission, principles, and values.

Fue un momento muy emocionante para la organización, y a la vez, lleno de desafíos. Sin embargo, logramos fortalecer nuestras relaciones, incorporar nuevos miembros a la junta directiva y contar con el grupo de personas más diverso hasta la fecha que representaba el trabajo que realizamos. Juntas, hemos mantenido la sostenibilidad y visibilidad de la organización, y hemos cumplido con nuestra misión, principios y valores.

Leading and Innovating with Anne / Liderando e innovando con Anne

There are several especial moments coming to my mind that Anne and I did together. One was the UFE 25th Anniversary celebration of our existence. It was a day where we received so much support, love and respect for our work, complete with the presentation of awards to partner groups, music and community. A highlight of the event was a great public conversation on stage between Anne, UFE’s board chair and Bill Fletcher, Jr.,  another good friend of UFE.

Recuerdo varios momentos especiales que Anne y yo compartimos. Uno de ellos fue la celebración del 25.º aniversario de UFE. Fue un día en el que recibimos muchísimo apoyo, cariño y respeto por nuestro trabajo, con la entrega de premios a grupos colaboradores, artistas y la comunidad. Un momento destacado del evento fue una gran conversación pública en el escenario entre Anne, presidenta de la junta directiva de UFE, y Bill Fletcher, Jr., otro buen amigo de UFE.

Then we survived the pandemic year together, leaning on each other to figure out a way to continue working and make sure the staff was taken care of. We made the decision to change UFE’s work week from 40 to 32 hours, a move we made as an expression of trust in the staff to get the work done and as a way to fulfill our commitment to a workplace where staff can balance work obligations with their personal, family, and community commitments. 

Después, sobrevivimos juntas al año de la pandemia, apoyándonos mutuamente para encontrar la manera de seguir trabajando y asegurarnos de que el personal estuviera bien protegido. Decidimos cambiar la jornada laboral de UFE de 40 a 32 horas, una decisión que tomamos como muestra de confianza en el personal para realizar su trabajo y como una forma de cumplir con nuestro compromiso de un lugar de trabajo donde el personal pueda compaginar sus obligaciones laborales con sus compromisos personales, familiares y comunitarios. 

We maintained the Popular Economics Education work by moving it to virtual spaces, allowing us to comply with all the requests from organizations around the country that were using the quarantine time to keep offering political education to their members and communities.

Mantuvimos el trabajo de Educación Económica Popular trasladándolo a espacios virtuales, lo que nos permitió atender todas las solicitudes de organizaciones de todo el país que aprovechaban la cuarentena para seguir ofreciendo educación política a sus miembros y comunidades.

Most recently, together Anne and I made possible a new workshop on Black and Brown unity, called “Racism in the Mind, Skin, and Action: A Workshop for Latinx Communities.” We designed it in collaboration with Equipo Maíz, the organization from El Salvador that is considered the popular education guru in Latin America. 

Recientemente, Anne y yo hicimos posible un nuevo taller sobre la unidad entre personas negras y latinas, llamado “Racismo en la mente, la piel y la acción: Un taller para comunidades latinas”. Lo diseñamos en colaboración con Equipo Maíz, la organización salvadoreña considerada la gurú de la educación popular en Latinoamérica.

This workshop starts with the real Black history in the U.S. It has activities to help the participants with self-reflection on anti-Blackness in Latinx communities, that they know from their own experiences. Other activities focus on the structural factors that push and pull immigration flows to the U.S. Together, these parts facilitate the critical thinking on why the system intentionally puts Black and Brown communities against one another, to block the Black and Brown solidarity that we need in our daily community work if we are going to make change. 

Este taller comienza con la verdadera historia negra en EE. UU. Incluyendo actividades que ayudan a los participantes a reflexionar sobre la antinegritud en las comunidades latinas, que conocen por experiencia propia. Otras actividades se centran en los factores estructurales que impulsan y atraen los flujos migratorios hacia EE. UU. En conjunto, estas actividades facilitan la reflexión crítica sobre por qué el sistema enfrenta intencionalmente a las comunidades negras y latinas para bloquear la solidaridad que necesitamos en nuestro trabajo comunitario diario si queremos generar un cambio.

During Tess’s tenure at the board, she took an important position on the Board’s Executive Committee – she became the Treasurer, a key position making sure our financials were in good standing. From the beginning, she was always asking the right questions and learning our systems, and helping us prepare to present reports. She always was willing to step up under difficult circumstances.

Durante su periodo en la junta directiva, Tess asumió un puesto importante en el Comité Ejecutivo: se convirtió en Tesorera, un puesto clave para garantizar que nuestras finanzas estuvieran en regla. Desde el principio, siempre hizo las preguntas correctas, aprendió nuestros sistemas y nos ayudó a preparar la presentación de informes. Siempre estuvo dispuesta a asumir el reto en circunstancias difíciles.

Through all of this, I deeply appreciated her personal support, and loved listening to her stories of trips around the world, “Te voy a extrañar.”

A lo largo de todo esto, aprecié profundamente su apoyo personal y me encantó escuchar sus historias de viajes alrededor del mundo, “I’ll going to miss you”.

Ushering in a New Era / Marcando el comienzo de una nueva era

Anne, Tess, and I were making a perfect team. We supported each other, each with the same vision of racial and economic justice. I’m going to miss my main supporters. We will continue our journeys in separate ways, but always still together in this struggle for a better future for all.

Anne, Tess y yo formábamos un equipo perfecto. Nos apoyábamos mutuamente, cada una con la misma visión de justicia racial y económica. Voy a extrañar a mis principales apoyos. Continuaremos nuestros caminos por separado, pero siempre juntas en esta lucha por un futuro mejor para todos.

Now, a new era is getting written at UFE. For the first time we have two powerful women as co-chairs. Elizabeth Pellerito is a good friend and comrade who has been part of UFE for a long time, co-facilitating several workshops and trainings with me and making a pretty good team. Khadidah Stone is a native of Montgomery, Alabama; an , advocate, organizer who is passionate about voter rights issues; and a leader connected with UFE’s Grassroots Organizing School of Alabama (GOSA) project.

Ahora, se está escribiendo una nueva era en UFE. Por primera vez, contamos con dos mujeres influyentes como copresidentes. Elizabeth Pellerito es una buena amiga y compañera que ha formado parte de UFE durante mucho tiempo, co-facilitando varios talleres y capacitaciones conmigo y formando un excelente equipo. Khadidah Stone es originaria de Montgomery, Alabama; defensora y organizadora, apasionada por los derechos del votante; y líder vinculada al proyecto de la Escuela de Organización de Base de Alabama (GOSA) de UFE.

UFE is now led by a strong trio, and I am so looking forward to what is coming – more UFE and economic justice movement building history to be written.

UFE ahora está liderada por un trío fuerte, y estoy ansiosa por ver lo que viene: más historia de UFE y de la construcción del movimiento de justicia económica por escribir.
