UFE’s Grassroots Organizing School of Alabama (GOSA) is meeting the need in Alabama for a pipeline of skilled organizers – and so much more. Three years in, GOSA has spawned a constellation of contributions that bolster the infrastructure for making change.

Over a long weekend in August, frequent UFE collaborator Luana Morales hosted the Interdepence Restival, an annual gathering she founded, in Western Massachusetts. The focus of the Restival is to restore and bring healing to people working on the front lines of social justice movements.

Summer is a season to enjoy the warm weather with family and friends, over cookouts, swimming in lakes and beaches. And these are great opportunities to share worries and concerns about the moment we live in, this difficult time. At UFE, we found new opportunities in our work, and through rest and recharge.

Despite all the challenges we are living with and devoted to finding a way beyond, it is an exciting time to be a part of UFE — with the support of our donors, supporters and allies.

North Carolina holds two dubious distinctions. It is ranked worst for workers for six years running (Oxfam 2025). And it scored best for business for three of the past four years (CNBD 2025). 

Together, these achievements tell the story of a deeply unfair economy that delivers outsized rewards to companies that enrich themselves through low pay, limited worker rights, and scant social obligations to NC people and communities.

UFE and our Responsible Wealth project joined Patriotic Millionaires and others in supporting the Equal Tax Act -- landmark legislation which would ensure that investment income is taxed the same as income earned by workers.

Earlier this month, Ana Delia Espino, UFE’s Director of Inclusive Economies – South, moderated a powerful Spanish-language webinar uplifting a local movement for automatic voter registration in Alabama. What might seem like a simple policy proposal is part of a much deeper story — one rooted in the long and ongoing struggle for civil rights and the full inclusion of immigrant and marginalized voices in our democracy.

We are excited to announce Gretchen Wang and Daniel Willis as our Summer 2025 interns. Gretchen and Daniel join us from the Social Justice strand of Brandeis University's World of Work (WOW) internship program.

They will be gathering data for a round of updates to UFE's Popular Economics Education workshops, and writing blogs to share UFE's impactful program work. Please join us in welcoming them!

On March 25, 2025, UFE joined workers, advocates, and allies from across North Carolina gathered at the General Assembly in Raleigh for a Day of Action to demand policies that reflect the dignity of working people. Their message? North Carolina cannot afford to delay basic economic dignity any longer.

This year, UFE’s Grassroots Organizing School of Alabama (GOSA) welcomed its 3rd annual cohort, a diverse group of 26 organizers, advocates, and community leaders. Among them was returning alumnus and now facilitator Iralda Hernández — joined this time by two of her daughters, Yamileth and Maria.

For this family, GOSA wasn’t just a retreat, it was a practice in moving at the speed of trust. That kind of movement doesn’t begin with strategy; it begins with relationship. By showing up fully for themselves and each other, they modeled what it looks like to build power from the ground up.
